IIT Madras is set to become a key player in India's quantum technology landscape with the establishment of a thematic quantum hub in Chennai. This ambitious initiative aims to bridge critical gaps in quantum communication and computing by leveraging advanced research and industry partnerships to propel India into the global quantum spotlight.
This initiative is part of a broader national effort that focuses on advancing quantum communication and computing through the development of a Metro Area Quantum Access Network (MAQAN). This network aims to connect IIT Madras with other institutions and organizations, serving as a testbed for cutting-edge quantum communication protocols like quantum key distribution (QKD).
The hub will focus on creating a robust Metro Area Quantum Access Network (MAQAN), fostering collaboration across institutions, and advancing groundbreaking research in quantum networks and computing.
With a strong emphasis on education and talent development, IIT Madras plans to democratize access to quantum technology education through specialized programs and scholarships, making it a breeding ground for the next generation of quantum experts. The initiative doesn’t stop at research and education; it also aims to build a robust quantum ecosystem by supporting start-ups and promoting industry-academia partnerships.
The upcoming International Conference on Quantum Communication, Measurement, and Computing (QCMC) in August 2024 will further spotlight IIT Madras’s contributions, bringing together global experts to discuss the latest developments and challenges in the field. This quantum hub not only positions IIT Madras as a leader in quantum research but also propels India towards becoming a global quantum technology powerhouse.
