India’s IT services company Infosys terminated 240 trainees’ contracts on 18 April 2025 after they failed to clear the company’s internal assessment tests. The affected trainees were informed about this news through emails. In February 2025, Infosys terminated over 300 trainees at its Mysuru campus after they failed to clear internal assessments, despite being given three attempts. The trainees were part of the company’s apprenticeship programme, having joined in October 2024 after more than two years of waiting due to hiring freezes and project delays during the pandemic. They served as System Engineers as well as Digital Specialist Engineers.
The Generic Foundation Training Programme of Infosys, which has been in place for over 20 years, is a standard process and its internal assessments are a part of it. The trainees were given three attempts to clear the assessments as they were also given extra preparation time, doubt clearing sessions and several mock tests. These measures notwithstanding, the dismissed included those who did not qualify.
Why did Infosys layoffs happen?
Infosys’s training and assessments are structured to ensure that only candidates who meet the company’s standards continue working for the company. These are supposed to be rigorous and necessary assessments to enhance the quality of its workforce, according to the company. Despite several opportunities and support, the affected trainees failed to pass the necessary tests.
The business environment is also difficult for the company. Net profit for the quarter ended March 2025 fell 12% year on year to Rs.74.2 billion (Rs.30.6 billion) on lower than expected revenue and muted growth forecast for the coming year, Infosys said. As a result of this, performance standards have tightened up and there has been a more thorough review of the new hires.
What is Infosys’ next plan?
After failing the internal assessments, the trainees who were let go by Infosys have been provided with several support measures by the company. The affected trainee will be paid one month’s pay and travel and accommodation assistance for those who are leaving the Mysuru campus to get back to Bengaluru or their hometowns. Infosys is offering free professional outplacement services to help the trainees get a new job. Apart from this, Infosys has partnered with NIIT and UpGrad to offer free upskilling programmes – 12 weeks of training for roles in the Business Process Management (BPM) industry and 4 weeks of IT fundamentals course for those who want to continue in IT.
The recently affected trainees can also access these programmes, as well as those who were laid off in February. After successful completion, trainees can get employed at Infosys or use this enhanced skill to look for a job elsewhere. However, despite these layoffs, Infosys is still planning to hire 20,000 freshers in fiscal 2026, which shows that the company is still going to bring in fresh talent, but with quality and performance in mind.
Infosys upskilling opportunities
To support trainees who did not pass recent assessments, Infosys has launched comprehensive upskilling programmes to also offer broader learning opportunities for employees and external learners. Infosys is offering free training courses in Business Process Management (BPM) and IT fundamentals to the affected trainees in collaboration with NIIT and UpGrad. The objective of these programmes is to improve core skills and develop the candidate for possible roles in Infosys or other organizations. The company is also helping with one month salary along with travel and accommodation assistance for the transition process.
Infosys uses the AI powered Lex platform to digitally reskill its employees in the areas like AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity and Generative AI. It provides personalised learning experiences to the employees and lets them earn tags such as "Power Programmer" to progress in their careers. Infosys Springboard offers free digital courses with the help of institutions like Coursera and Harvard Business Publishing, externally.
Future Outlook
Infosys terminated 240 trainees who failed internal assessments, similar earlier this year when most trainees were terminated. The business claims that these tests are ordinary and are essential to guarantee high values are kept up. Trainees impacted are being supplemented through support and upskilling opportunities to get them on the upward trajectory of their career progression.
