At the Dataquest Digital Leadership Conclave in New Delhi, Udai Singh, President - GenAI Initiatives, NIIT, shared valuable insights on the future of talent development in the AI-driven world. His session, titled "Better, Faster, Cheaper, Safer: Talent Development in the Age of AI," focused on how AI is revolutionizing workforce training and learning methodologies.
AI-Powered Learning: A Paradigm Shift
AI has made such a difference to learning and skill development, says Udai. "Most of the things we tried people did not let us do as they thought it was beyond technology to implement, but with the help of this technology it is actually happening now," he said. The emergence of AI enables a better, faster, cheaper, and safer learning experiences that allows for reshaping of workforce training on the global scale.
From his talk, one of the key takeaways was that although AI involves simple natural language recognition, now it has gone beyond this to multilayer one which means it can be broader used on education and professional training. "Technology is becoming very cheap, rapidly, costs have fallen over 90 per cent in the past two years." He noted that AI supported learning solutions are now available at a fraction of the previous costs, and therefore are now available to a larger audience.
Small Language Models and Industry-Specific AI
Udai acknowledged the growing importance of small language models (SLMs) that are industry specific and addressed the ongoing debate on whether India should develop its own large language models (LLMs). "SLMs fit perfectly with the needs of organizations, which have a wealth of domain expertise." We are using our 45 year content and data legacy to enhance learning experiences through AI at NIIT, he added.
AI’s Role in Workforce Transformation
Udai introduced a workforce transformation framework that categorizes employees based on their experience and expertise levels, identifying three key roles for AI:
-
Learning Accelerator: For early-career professionals, AI serves as a tool to accelerate learning and skill development, ensuring they become deployable faster.
-
Productivity Enhancer: For experienced professionals facing industry disruptions, AI aids in upskilling and adaptation, keeping their expertise relevant.
-
Impact Multiplier: For niche experts, AI enables organizations to duplicate and scale their knowledge through AI-driven avatars and automation.
He emphasized the need for companies to focus on high-impact functions such as marketing, sales, product R&D, customer service, and software engineering, where AI adoption can yield 80% of the benefits.
AI Agents and the Future of Work
Udai also used the opportunity to discuss the rise of AI agents, saying that, like the personal computing revolution of the past 40 years, the impact of AI agents would be, too. Such AI driven systems will not simply engage in simple interaction, but rather, do so when they are ready to autonomously handle complex tasks. According to him, 'just like Robotic Process Automation, which helps completely change business workflows by seamlessly becoming a part of the operations, AI agents will totally change the way in which teamwork and collaboration will happen in operations.'
Challenges and the Road Ahead
However, according to Udai, less than 5% of AI use cases can truly have their worth demonstrated, and less than 15% of AI use cases can take from the idea to production. Structured leadership adoption programs are also called for as the best way to drive the integration of AI, he said. He advised that for AI adoption to succeed, leaders have to clearly communicate their vision, benefits and the repercussions on both personal and organizational levels.
Conclusion: The 100-Day AI Journey
A 100 day structured AI adoption program has been developed by NIIT to make AI usage democratized across organizations. Just like IT revolution came into being in the past decades, AI adoption must not be confined to tech people, but must be spread across your workforce.” 'I think that organizations which will be winners in this revolution—will be the true winners—will be things that can be integrated in daily workflows,' Singh concluded.
A key aspect in future transformation of the workforce in an industry is an AI driven learning to keep a competitive edge in the industry as AI constantly reshares industries. Udai Singh’s insight gives a strategic roadmap to organizations to use AI for talent development and to future proof their workforce.
