In more than ten years, the search engine Google Search has been considered the absolute monarch of internet search and has a global market share of nearly 90 percent by early 2025. But recently a new competitor has shown up, the new AI powered browser Comet made by Perplexity that seeks to transform web exploration and make it highly AI-driven. Statcounter reported that Google had lost its grip over the global search engine market below the 90 percent mark since 2015. Google’s global search market share was under 90% during each of the final three months of 2024. The question is- Is Comet opening up a new era that can shake up the long held dominance of Google?
Google’s market share under pressure but still dominant
Google has lost its global search dominance, falling below 90 percent at the end of 2024 in the first prolonged session since the year 2015, but at current rates used to be around 89 percent. Although this decline might not be big in the entire picture, it is indicative of some significant cracks in the near-monopoly that Google enjoyed as AI-based alternatives and privacy focused platforms start becoming a reality.
The number of analytics sources that point to Google sustaining below 90 percent across the globe in the search market share is valid. This loss recurred regularly in the fourth quarter of 2024, when the market share fell to below the 90 percent threshold- a milestone that has not been achieved in almost ten years. Other algorithms capable of competing with it like Microsoft Bing, ChatGPT-driven search engine that is equipped with in-built AI features have also increased their fan base and others like Perplexity which utilizes the Comet algorithm are shifting the dynamic and ensuring the lengths of search and browsing are changing.
How does Comet challenge the status quo?
Perplexity encapsulates its mission in a recent blog post “We believe curiosity is a superpower. It’s the spark that propels humanity forward. Yet, the web—our greatest source of information—was never designed to nurture curiosity; instead, we’ve been asked to ‘browse’ it through a one-way lens. That’s why we made Comet.” As opposed to conventional search engines, which generate unchanging lists of hyperlinks, Comet incorporates AI functionality to provide thick client responses of summarised answers straight in a web browser. On X (formerly Twitter), Prashant Puri, CEO of AdLift, tweeted, “Perplexity’s Comet browser is a serious contender. It’s not just a browser, it’s an intelligent browsing experience, tailored for the modern, curiosity-driven user.”
Its AI Assistant automates all routine online tasks and assists people to browse confusing websites, which is the blend that is expected to make the search of any information faster, more intuitive, and proactive. It should save friction among users thinking of switching by being based on Chromium, thus relatable and compatible with Chromium programs.
Such AI-driven strategy is consistent with the changing user demands of more intelligent and context-sensitive help beyond keywords. Whereas Google has gradually introduced layers of AI into its offerings, in the form of AI Mode and Gemini, Comet begins with AI and it markets itself as a logical extension of the browsing experience.
Is this the beginning of a Comet era?
Although it maintains a commanding position of nearly 90 percent in market share in 2025, statistics show that there is an increasing diversification of search trends as other AI-based rivals take away the market share. The launch of Comet is both a symbol and a practical measure toward making browsing completely more interactive and smart. It probably will not overthrow Google in a day; however, it is a sign that the golden age of keyword-only search against a backdrop of competitive websites has come to its last stage, granting room to AI-based browsing engines.
To users and the industry, this could become the beginning of a Comet era when curiosity is driven not only by search requests but also by AI-powered exploration tools that predict what users want and can deliver more valuable information more effectively.
