Scientific research and technological innovation are the new foundational pillars for a nation in today’s technology-driven world. Scientific progress is crucial in driving societal progress. For the same, recognizing the need to encourage young scientists and technologists to contribute to national development, the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has launched the Scheme for Young Scientist and Technologist (SYST) Programme.
This initiative aims to promote young scientists by supporting action-driven research projects that address social, economic, and technological challenges. The SYST Programme specifically caters to employed young scientists, providing them with an opportunity to work on research and technology solutions that contribute to sustainable and inclusive development.
What is the objective of this DST program?
The Scheme for Young Scientist and Technologist (SYST) Programme is designed to encourage young scientists to apply their expertise in socially relevant research. It promotes affordable and scalable scientific and technological solutions for marginalized communities. Also, facilitating the integration of young researchers into India’s innovation ecosystem.
What are the key focus areas?
Under Component A, project proposals are invited in the following thrust areas:
- Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry
- Green Technologies
- Renewable Energy
- Marine Biology
- Waste Valorization
- Occupational Health & Safety
What are the eligibility criteria?
If an applicant is interested to apply under Component A, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Qualification: Must hold a Ph.D. in Basic or Applied Sciences/MD/MS (Candidates who have submitted their Ph.D. thesis are also eligible).
- Employment: Must be employed in a recognized academic or scientific institution.
- Age Limit: Must be below 40 years as of the last date of application submission.
- Age relaxation of 5 years is applicable for women, differently-abled (Divyangjan), SC, ST, OBC, and EWS candidates.
- Host Organization Support: The institution must provide necessary infrastructure and facilities for project execution.
- Mentorship: The applicant must be associated with a mentor who holds a permanent/regular position in the proposed research area.
Application Process
Applicants need to follow these steps for submitting a proposal under Component A:
- Online Submission: Proposals must be submitted online through the DST e-PMS portal.
- Proposal Format: The application must be in the prescribed format available on the DST website.
- Submission Deadline: The last date for submission is 31st March 2025.
- Screening & Selection:
- Applications are reviewed by a Screening Committee constituted by DST.
- Selected candidates will be invited for a presentation before an Expert Committee.

- Project Tenure: Maximum 3 years.
- Funding Limit: Up to ₹50 lakhs, including overhead charges.
