 Microsoft and OpenAI are reportedly planning to collaborate for a groundbreaking data center project. The tech giants are going to work on an ambitious AI Supercomputer "Stargate" which is expected to make its debut in 2028.

Stargate is an AI supercomputer that might revolutionize the field of artificial intelligence. This project aims to power OpenAI's next generation of AI systems, including advanced models. Its name inspired by the science fiction movie 'Stargate' from 1994 evokes a sense of interstellar exploration and discovery in the realm of AI. Just as the movie’s trailer describes it as “the key to the past, the door to the future, the passage to discovery,” Stargate aims to unlock new frontiers in AI.

Stargate is estimated to be one of the largest and most advanced data centers globally. With an estimated cost valuation of around $100 billion, this project is 100 times more costly than the largest data centers currently in operation. This data center will have a power consumption capacity of 5 gigawatts and will span several hundred acres of land.

The supercomputer project is estimated to take between five to six years to complete. Microsoft and OpenAI have conscientiously planned the project in five stages, where Stargate represents the fifth and final stage.

Along with the endeavor of Stargate AI supercomputer, Microsoft also aims to launch a phase 4 supercomputer for OpenAI around 2026. To date, Microsoft has already invested over $13 billion in OpenAI for ChatGPT-related infrastructure.

Stargate AI supercomputer is anticipated to be a huge leap toward AI's future. Stargate promises to unlock new capabilities into realms of knowledge and capability. It might be able to understand context, nuance, and emotions at unprecedented levels. 

Its computational prowess may revolutionize scientific research by assisting in drug discovery to climate modeling. Commercially, it could optimize supply chains, enhance natural language understanding, and much more.
