Domestic Flight Cancellation Due to Coronavirus: Consumers Wait for Hours on Customer Care Numbers of Airline Companies

As consumers turn to customers care numbers for domestic flight cancellation and rescheduling, airlines report experiencing high call volumes

As concerns around the Coronavirus outbreak grips the nation, several people who had pre-booked flights for reasons ranging from personal to professional are now calling airlines for domestic flight cancellation. As advisories to avoid crowded places and travel are pouring in on a daily basis to prevent the proliferation of the pandemic, more and more travelers are canceling their plans.

Due to this reason, airline companies in India are experiencing high call volumes in their call centres and increased mentions on their social media platforms as a result of which customers are reportedly waiting for a long time on customer care numbers.

“I have been trying to reach your call center for the last 2 days, the phone is engaged throughout the day. I need to reschedule my flights amidst the Covid19 outbreak,” tweets Soumyabrata Roy. “Call centre numbers not working. No support on cancellation or reschedule of plan due to COV fear,” says Shailesh Rana, like several others on Twitter.

Customers are either looking for a refund for domestic flight cancellation or are looking to reschedule to a later date. However, almost all airline companies in India have tweeted saying that they were experiencing high call volumes, and hence were taking time but reverting to all customers.

“We are experiencing high volumes at call centres and social media handles due to COVID-19 outbreak. Revert to your queries might be delayed than usual. If you are not traveling in the next 72 hours, please consider calling us later. Your co-operation and patience in this regard will be highly appreciated,” tweeted Vistara.

“Dear pax, as we are facing high volume of calls. Kindly cooperate with us,” says Air India. Airline companies also mention that customers can turn to their respective websites for more information on domestic flight cancellation and rescheduling. Furthermore, almost all airlines are offering rescheduling of dates for free to their customers. Airlines are charging cancellation fees mercilessly.very much inhuman. They are trying to encash & misuse the helpless situation. They are only business – money oriented. They have least respect for emergency situation of the nation &the people. They have already penalised heavily( ironically, according to t/c)REQUEST&APPEAL FOR IMMEDIATE STRINGENT ACTION BY Govt of India.

  2. Sunil says:

Yes go air is totally behaving inhuman and unprofessional, even the state govt who officially banned tourists (domestic also), G o Air is not refunding amount for cancellation of tickets with full refund, A&N Govt. has closed all tourism locations up to 26.03.2020 and advised tourists to refrain to coming port Blair.

  3. Anjani kumar sharan says:

I have booked for journey from Ranchi to Bangalore by Go air on 08.03.2020 at 2PM but due to Government advisory, I have requested to Go air for cancellation , unfortunately heavy cancellation charge born by me inspit of DGCA guide lines. Pl look into the matter and also request GOING and concerned ministry to look into the matter.

  4. Manoj Bhatia says:

All domestic airlines are very rude and no refunds or rescheduling of dates. They say no cancellation and no refund also. Taking full advantage of the situation, which is very bad. They will also have to suffer some day, Just wait and watch

  5. Sourish B. J. says:

When some airlines are telling that they are not charging for their flight date rescheduled by customer, but it’s all fake. Today itself I rescheduled a flight in same airlines with just a date change, it costed me more than the previous flight ticket charges.
All merciless fellows, they should analyse and understand when to be business minded, not in this global crisis situation.

  6. Raj Mahendra Singh says:

Truly, airline companies are least concerned about the Critical Situation due to worldwide COVID 19 infection and are taking undue and unethical advantage of the situation by not responding to the calls on customer care numbers regarding cancellation/rescheduling of prebooked tour.
Despite DGCA ‘s advisory to airlines dated 13th March,2020 to consider cancelling/rescheduling they are blatantly rejecting it..

  7. Kuljit Singh says:

SpiceJet is ahead of all airlines in taking disadvantage of the situation, even they are not considering the genuine reasons for rescheduling and putting hefty cancellation charges.

  8. Ravi kumar says:

Air india didn’t refund any penny as it charged whole amount. Its very shame, whole world is suffering from corona and still they are seeing profit..My flight was on 27th from chennai to patna

  9. Dibbyo choudhury says:

My flight is on 19th march from mumbai to ranchi and on 23rd march from ranchi to mumbai
I have even tried to reschedule buy it didnt worked.
I want DGCA to get into this matter and short out our problems

  10. Pooja handa says:

I am also experiencing the same issue, call is not getting connected to the call center and not getting reply in case of email. Travel date is coming near , need refund or reschedule to may asap.

  11. Amit says:

On top of that the agents – MakeMyTrip yatra Cleartrip goibibo etc will add their cancellation charges too. So you paid some amount… Airline cancellation is 3000 times number of pax, so remaining refund to agent. Then agent do their cancellation and transfer further lower amount to you. The irony is agents won’t help you in any way with cancellation process and you end up calling the airlines directly for cancellation… but the moment refund is received by agent… they will come in picture at the time of charging their fees from the refund amount they receive from airlines. Lesson: Skip the agents at the time of uncertainty. Can you change this… No you can’t. It’s the system. Btw airlines everywhere are like that. Hotels are better than airlines in this regard.

As government has declared travel restrictions and we were going for devi darshan on navratra so we want to cancel our raipur to delhi tickets but customer care number is busy all time and airlines are not giving refund on booked tickets. Government should interfere on this matter as we are losing our money (hard earned money). It’s no way acceptable and highly disappointing.

  21. Neetu says:

Due to situation of corona virus Indigo air lines are not helpful. They refund only 15 to 20 percentage of our air fare. We had booked tiket of 7 family members for vaishnodevi tour two way, but because of this situation we want to cancel aur ticket but indigo helpline said that they apply cancellation charges. After cancellation we will get only 16 k out of 60 k. Which is not acceptable. I request government of Maharashtra to interfere in this.

  24. T Ingraji Singh says:

I have booked flight from Guwahati to Mumbai on 4th April 2020 online using Makemytrip.com. They dropped a message to me that the concern flight has been rescheduled ( advancing ) and after that so far for the last 6/7 days no respond at all. No calls through. No mails received by them. I have tried calling, mailing in the middle of the night, after midnight, early dawn etc. in addition to full day time attempts. How do I convey my inability to adjust to their random rescheduling and wish to cancel ?
I am requesting full refund of the fares for the entire flight. Is there any way out ? Someone please help.
In the developing scenario of Corona scares and Govt’s strict travel advisory they should honestly refund the fares without any trouble even. It made me to feel that they are taking advantage of this pandemic in to rampant looting

  25. Sunit says:

I have asked Indigo to confirm cancellation charges for booking on 12th and 18th April or suggest for rescheduling but I am getting answer that they will consider travel to North east countries only.
They are not talking about Domestic travel
Now all CC numbers have stopped working . Calls get disconnected automatically.
