Wipro Technologies, the global IT services division of Wipro Limited, has

announced that it has become a member of the EPCglobal Network, a joint venture

between EAN International and the Uniform Code Council (UCC). Bullish about the

growth of the radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, Wipro

Technologies is the first Indian software services company to enter this league.

"By providing near perfect supply chain visibility, RFID has the

potential to radically alter the way retail and CPG companies do their

business," said Bhanumurthy BM, vice-president, retail, CPG and

distribution solutions at Wipro Technologies. "We have been following the

work done at the Auto-ID center at MIT very closely, and are convinced that the

new technology and business framework around RFID and EPC network will transform

the retail supply chain and demand management, as we know it today. As a member

of EPCglobal Network and a provider of end-to-end IT solutions, we can play a

leading role in helping organizations use this technology for near- and

long-term RoI," he added.

EPCglobal is participating in the development of industry-driven standards

for the electronic product code (EPC) network to support the use of RFID in

today’s fast-moving, information rich trading networks. The EPC network is

being touted as an enabling technology that can transform the global supply

chain through a new, open global standard for real-time, automatic

identification of items in the supply chain of any company, in any industry,

anywhere in the world. The EPC network is expected to make organizations more

effective by enabling true visibility of information about items in the supply

chain.
