Wipro has appointed Rajan Kohli to lead its year-old digital business unit, which the IT services major wants to transform into one of its three top service lines.
Rajan is currently heading Wipro’s banking and financial services business and his performance as the BFSI head has been well acclaimed. Industry experts and internal sources reportedly believe that he is the right choice to lead the digital business.
Wipro is betting big on its digital unit and plans to take it over $1 Billion in the coming years. Application services and infrastructure services are currently its two major service lines which account for a big chunk of its business. It is hence carving out some aggressive strategies to expand and elevate its digital business to that level.
The company has been pretty vocal about its expanding focus in the digital space and its intentions of building up the digital business by identifying opportunities in IOT, open source and artificial intelligence.
The appointment of Rajan Kohli as the digital business head also comes on the back of a major restructuring that happened some days back, as part of which it named Abid Ali Neemuchwala as its first Chief Operating officer since the last six years and also elevated two senior executives to the rank of president.
In line with its digital push, Wipro has also recently partnered with Acquia, a digital experience company to enhance its delivery capabilities in the digital space.
The changes are also reflective of a larger industry trend that is gaining strength as ‘digital’ becomes the next big business opportunity for IT services companies. Wipro’s peers like TCS and Infosys are also quite equally matching pace with their aggressive digital strategies and investments.
