New Update

A CIO is known by the efficiency he/she brings in the
organizational processes, given the strength of the various technological
deployments. Even with the complexity of big businesses, CIOs have to keep
themselves aware of every process that has to do with improvement, maybe with a
little dash of technology thrown in. Adding more to this complexity is the fact
that while processes are horizontal, departments are vertical, giving rise to a
lot of cross sections, which have to be addressed. It is these many different
needs of the organizations that are catered to by a host of enterprise
applications. Starting from ERP, which is now almost hygiene, organizations have
evolved to adopting SCM, CRM, BI, and even more esoteric applications such as
ITSM, BPM and the likes.

Though the need for applications differs for most
organizations depending on their size and the vertical they operate in, most
CIOs whom Dataquest spoke with, agreed that centralization of information is the
key to get everybody (inside and outside the organization) connected for the
real time picture-anytime, anywhere. With the concept of an extended
enterprise now virtually entrenched in India Inc, deployment of a wide range of
enterprise applications does not elicit surprise anymore. ERP and SCM have been
deployed by many big organizations. Their deployment is a definite must have
across all verticals. Organizations now are making moves to go further up the
ladder-getting more user groups connected, going in for a higher-end versions
etc.

Over the past couple of years, Business Intelligence and
Data Warehousing have been topping the list of must have applications to get the
organizations engine roaring. Most futuristic companies are now gearing up for
mobility. RFID and managing a mobile workforce come in the bracket of the next
big thing. Workflow/Document management is another application that most
companies dealing with any sort of documentation cannot afford to ignore.

Turn to the next pages to get a snapshot of 'The Apps'
across three different verticals. Talking about their already deployed must have
applications and the ones on their wish list in this issue of Dataquest. We have
Anand Sengupta, head of IT, Daikin India; Sanjay Mittal, head of IT, Navin
Fluorine International; and Mani Mulki, CIO, Godrej Industries.
