WhatsApp, just days after Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement, has made it official that the platform can now be used to include 8 participants on audio and video calls. Starting today, we’re doubling the number of participants you can have on a WhatsApp video or voice call from 4 to 8 people at a time,” says the official blog of the platform. WhatsApp video call earlier allowed only four people at a time.
As the COVID-19 has restricted the movement of individuals and has confined most of them to stay at home, video and audio calls have become an indispensable part of the daily lives of millions across the globe. Group calling has especially become the need of the hour as people look for ways to conduct meets and even connect with their families.
“Over the last month, people on average are spending over 15 billion minutes talking each day on WhatsApp calls, well above a typical day before the pandemic. And just like written messages, all those calls are protected with end-to-end encryption. We have built group calling in a way that makes it available for as many users as possible, including people on lower-end devices and slow network condition,” says WhatsApp.
How to Get WhatsApp Video Call for 8 Participants Feature
To make WhatsApp video call to eight people at a time all users need to do is to update to the latest version of WhatsApp available on iOS or Android. Furthermore, users need to note that all participants they wish to include in the video call must also be on the latest version of WhatsApp, which is 2.20.50.
Apart from increasing participants’ limit on WhatsApp, Mark Zuckerberg recently announced various initiatives to help people stay connected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Messenger Rooms, which allows group video calls to be initiated from Messenger, Facebook app, and soon also from Instagram, WhatsApp and Portal was the highlight of the announcement.
