WhatsApp is set to roll out a new voice chat feature similar to Discord that allows group participants to engage in audio chats without requiring calling up each individual in the group. Currently, the feature is available for only a selected group of beta users. It is being used by Android beta testers and was observed by WABetaInfo, but WhatsApp may introduce the feature for all very soon.

This year WhatsApp has been testing a number of features from video messaging, chat transfer, ability to login via Email to privacy settings. It has been continuously working on new features to provide a better user experience. In the wake of these continuous improvements on the platform it has introduced a new feature as 'Voice Chats'.

Voice Chat will allow users to join or leave audio chat at any time. This feature has eliminated the hassle of calling each member individually. Users may associate this feature with the group calling feature of WhatsApp but it's different, it is more similar to the feature we see on Telegram or Discord. Voice chat will send silent notifications to group members instead of ringing everyone in the group.

What are the key features of WhatsApp Voice Chat?

  • Members will be able to join or leave the audio chat at any time.
  • The group icon will change into a wave icon and show a "Connect" button to join if someone has initiated a voice chat.
  • Voice Chat will remain active for 60 minutes after everyone leaves.
  • Chat won't show up as a full-screen call notification as in group chat
  • Voice chat will be end-to-end encrypted.
  • It may not be available for groups with less than 32 members, but this limit might change later.

The feature can be accessed by installing the latest beta version of WhatsApp on Android devices. WABetaInfo has mentioned that the feature may roll out for more users in the coming time.
