WhatsApp has unveiled new security features that will be added to the platform in the upcoming weeks. The Meta-owned platform says in its official blog that while end-to-end encryption is the foundation of that security, it would continue to roll out newer features to ensure that its users have more control over their messages and extra security.
New WhatsApp New Security Features
The company has revealed that it is working on the following new updates, which will be made available to the public in the upcoming months:
- Those shifting their accounts from an older device to new one will henceforth need to double check that it is really them. The platform will now ask the old device to verify that the user wants to take this step as an extra security check. This feature can help alert users to an unauthorized attempt to move an account to another device, says the official blog of the company.
- Dangerous software and mobile malware is one of the biggest threats to people's privacy today. The hackers can take control of the device and send unwarranted messages from the victim’s WhatsApp device. Device Verification adds an extra step behind the scenes that authenticate and protect a user’s account if a device is somehow compromised.
- Additionally, automatic security codes are being introduced, which is a new, private, and automated way to verify encryption keys, for those who like to do so. It’ll be easier to confirm that users are messaging the intended recipient. Users can check this manually by going to the encryption tab under a contact’s info.
- Also, a process called “Key Transparency” is being rolled out that allows users to automatically verify that they have a secure connection.
The company has also promised more updates to the platform, which will be rolled out soon.
