A week in Humanoid Sophia’s life: World’s first AI-made NFT to gain a sibling

Last week, an NFT artwork—the first of its kind—created by an artificial intelligence was sold. Titled Sophia Instantiation, the artwork was a self-portrait of Humanoid robot Sophia in collaboration with Italian digital artist Andrea Bonaceto. The self-portrait was sold for $688,888.

The artwork is a 12 second video file showing Bonaceto’s portrait evolving into Sophia’s digital painting and along with a physical artwork painted by Sophia.

On Sophia twitter account she says, “The first NFT collaboration between an AI, a mechanical collective being and an artist-collector has been born.”

The Blockchain-based NFT buzz has officially entered mainstream. It is a digital signature saved on blockchain-based distributed ledgers to verify the sale of digital collectibles and items. Twitter chief exec, Jack Dorsey sold first ever tweet for over $2.5 million. Artist Grimes sold her work $5.8 million. Digital artist Beeple, real name Mike Winkelmann, sold a JPG file via Christie’s for $70 million. Croatian tennis player, Oleksandra Oliynykova sold exclusive lifetime ownership for part of her right arm for over $5000 by putting it up for auction on NFT marketplace OpenSea.

Sophia was created by Hanson Robotics and has the ability to converse with and recognize people and hold facial expressions too. Sophia famously interviewed Angela Merkel and was also granted citizenship by Saudi Arabia, and thereby becoming world’s first robot citizen.

Now Sophia will get a sibling. Immervision in partnership with Hanson Robotics is developing JOYCE, a humanoid robot to unite computer vision community. Sophia will help evolve machine perception whereas from the expertise derived from developing Sophia, Hanson Robotics will use it equip JOYCE with a humanoid body and a visual cortex based on Immervision’s panomorph. Sophia will be upgraded with the same camera ultra wide angle panomorph cameras.
