Nick Weston has been with Sun Microsystems since 1982 and has seemed the

company in various capacities. He currently heads Sun's global marketing for

the energy sector. In his conversation with Rahul Gupta of CyberMedia News, he

provides an insight into Sun's roadmap for India's Oil and Utility sector.

Energy industry in India is at a very nascent stage as far as technology

adoption is concerned. How is Sun going to drive this market?

As the market is opening up, we see huge potential as far as technology

adoption is concerned. We already have clients like ONGC, Reliance

Petrochemicals and so on. These players have potential to compete in the global

market and they are doing so. Almost all major oil companies are investing in

technology deployment in this sector and we are quite upbeat the way things are

moving and we see huge growth for Sun in this sector.

We have taken lots of technology initiatives for oil and gas exploration in

this sector. Fast CPUs, large memory footprints, speedy access to memory,

precision graphics and technology to optimize compute resource utilization all

contribute to faster compute infrastructure and faster exploration. We are

committed to bringing cost-effective, advanced technologies to market that

deliver the compute infrastructure performance oil and gas companies need in

order to succeed.

What is delivery mechanism to provide technologies in this sector?

The solutions we provide in the India are through our partners. We do not

provide direct utility solution and work with ISVs, partners and integrators to

provide solution in this sector. We provide hardware infrastructure and

networking solutions through our partners.

How important is the Indian market for Sun?

The reason we are here in India is because of the size of the market. It is

a key market for both utility and gas. It's a prime target market for us in

Asia Pacific region. China is another important market in this region and we are

soon going to take similar initiatives in China like we have taken in the Indian

market. We have a huge team over here to take care of the entire region and we

might source some of our solutions to the Chinese market.

What is Sun's roadmap for the Indian energy sector?

We have been in the Indian market for quite sometime. We have a great local

team here. As I said there is huge potential in the oil and gas sector as

companies are investing and expecting ROI on that and so are we.

We do see energy sector opening up in India and are keeping a close eye on

that as well. Energy sector is going through a privatizing phase and we see huge

technology adoption in this segment. The boom that has happened in telecom

sector in India where we are the major player, we see same happening in energy

sector as well. We provide billing solutions to all the major telecom companies

in India and we intend to do so in energy segment as well.

How have you developed a vision based on services-driven network to

deliver real-time services?

Sun recognizes that given the highly competitive nature of the utility

business, owning the 'end user' relationship is the key to utility companies'

future. We recognize that the top priorities of the utility industry are

integration with legacy systems and security, especially with increasing threats

of terrorism.
