What are the challenges faced by organizations in using open source

application?



Most organizations dont understand the complexity of licensing of open

source software. They believe that all open source software is licensed in the

same way. However, there are over sixty open source licenses available. Linux is

licensed under an open source license called the GPR but if you use an open

Solaris it is licensed under a different license program. And these two open

source projects can neither share information nor work together. The support

modeling and distribution is also different. For open software we purchase a

subscription service rather than a propriety license; the subscription service

gives the rights to go on getting support, updates and security fixes.

What are the benefits and advantages offered by open source?



The organization typically prefers open source for the lower costs offered,

though in some cases it might not be true. This actually depends on how well the

company is deploying and managing an open source environment. Some companies

like to contribute updates and fixes to the software, they are thus able to

manually modify the software to meet the needs of the open source community.

What are the advantages offered by HP UX to its customers?



HP UX focuses on reliability and availability of servers in large mission

critical environment. We offer special features to keep the servers up across

multiple sites. Other advantages are the scalability of the environment to

include more users as well as the serviceability of HP UX; if some component

fails, the system has to run without affecting the business and we are able to

provide that kind of service for our customers. HP UX is one of the best

virtualized UNIX servers available in the market and we provide large number of

tools to help manage virtualized environment. In India our major customers are

BPCL, BSE, SBI, and ONGC.

What are the latest technology trends and adoption of open source?



Virtualization is the hot technology and is a very complex procedure; HP UX

helps in managing this complex procedure in a manageable way. Companies are

adapting virtualization and open source servers and infrastructure that can

provide high scalability and manageability. This will help in creating a push

toward industry standards Linux and Unix servers and open source infrastructure.
