The Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), a unit of ISRO, is offering a free online course titled "Basics of Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System and Global Navigation Satellite System". This comprehensive course is part of the IIRS Outreach Programme, which aims to strengthen the use of space technology and its applications among academic and user segments. There are a limited number of seats available, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Who should join?

This course is for undergraduate and postgraduate students from any year. Technical and scientific staff from Central and State Government organisations, as well as faculty and researchers from universities and other institutions, are also eligible.

The course will cover the basics of Remote Sensing, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). It consists of five modules, which participants can either take as a comprehensive course or individually. The modules cover topics such as:

  • Remote Sensing and Digital Image Analysis
  • Overview of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)
  • Overview of Geographical Information System (GIS)
  • Overview of Geocomputation and Geo-web services
  • RS & GIS Applications in Natural Resource Management

How to join?

Participants can register for the course online. There are two main ways to register:

  1. Through a Nodal Centre: If your institute or university is a registered Nodal Centre, you need to apply through them. Your registration will be approved by the coordinator of the nodal centre.
  2. Individual Participation: If your institute is not part of the IIRS Outreach network, you can register as an "Individual participant". Individual registrations are approved automatically.

The comprehensive course has 10,000 seats, and each of the individual modules has 5,000 seats.

Conclusion

The training sessions will be held online from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM IST. The sessions will also be available offline within 24 hours on the E-CLASS platform. Participants with at least 70% attendance are eligible to take an online exam. Those who score a minimum of 50% on the exam will be awarded a "Course Completion" certificate from IIRS, Dehradun. Individual participants who devote at least 70% of the total session hours will receive a "Course Participation" certificate.
