The central government came up with the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PM Internship Scheme) that provides a wonderful chance to the young generation of India to secure work experience in the form of internship in one of the most recognized companies in India. The scheme, which is a pilot project that will begin on October 3, 2024, aims at empowering young individuals by exposing them to reputed organizations because this will bolster their skills and employability.

According to the information given by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Parliament, over 1,27,000 internships were proposed by the companies across the country during the first stage of this scheme. At this stage the scheme had been overwhelmingly received with 6,21, 000 applications involving approximately 1,81,000 young people. It is through these that companies could give more than 82,000 offers to 60,000 candidates where about 28,000 youths accepted the job and 8,700 began their internships. This promising beginning points to the increased interest among the youngsters to acquire skills by working in the real world. In the initial stage, figures (1,27,000+ opportunities, 6,21,000 applications by 1,81,000 youngsters, 82,000+ offers, 28,000+ acceptances, 8,700+ joinings) were reported as direct answers to enquiries of the Members of Parliament and revealed in the publications of the governmental publications and the national press reports

Similarly in the second round, the numbers of the participating companies, districts, opportunity posted, total of applications, offers and acceptances have come from the details provided by the Finance Minister and confirmed by several news sources. The second run of PM Internship Scheme, launched on January 9, 2025 addressed the rest of internship positions. In this round 327 companies in 735 districts offered around 1.18 lakh internships. It was also so popular as 2.14 lakh of the young people had submitted 4.55 lakh applications. By July 17, 2025, 71,077 offers had been received by companies, and 22,537 offers accepted. The government made it clear to explain that issuance of offers and acceptance remain active.

Target: One crore internships in top 500 companies

In the 2024-25 Union Budget, PM Internship Scheme is proposed to help offer internship opportunities to 1 crore youth across the next 5 years in the top 500 companies in India. The high aspiration in the first year will be to provide 1.25 lakh internships. The scheme runs in association with state authorities, industry organisations and academic institutions and works towards connecting young skills with the industry in a big way.

Eligibility criteria and educational qualifications

The young individuals (aged between 21 and 24 years) who are not under full-time education or employment are invited to apply to the PM Internship Scheme. The candidates must have passed one of the following certificates: High school or higher secondary, ITI certificate or Poly technic diploma, or graduate degrees: BA, B. Sc, B. Com, BBA, BCA, B. Pharma etc. This broad-based selection criteria is appropriate so that many youth with diverse education backgrounds can be accommodated and get rich work experiences and internships.

The stipend received by the intern is Rs 5000  per month which consists of Rs 4500 financed by central government and Rs500 paid by companies as their Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) funds. Also the interns receive a Rs6000 joining bonus. Businesses are at liberty to bump up the stipend using their CSR accounts in case the intern performs outstandingly. In addition to the monetary gain, working at the finest companies of India during a period of one year will remain the ultimate advantage of the scheme.

The PM Internship Scheme is a golden chance to the Indian youth to close the theory-practice gap by getting trained in the most prestigious firms. With the full backing of governments and with the active involvement of major firms, the program will enable millions of young people in India to gain significant competencies to pursue a rewarding career in the future.
