Mobile has literally become the driving force even for the government in India. The tangible evidence lies in the fact that the Government of India recognized a set of e-governance apps enabling three different areas. To ascertain this, we looked at the top government mobile apps which recently received honors from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology at the annual award ceremony (Digital India Awards 2016 which were earlier called Web Ratna Awards) organized by National Informatics Centre (NIC). At the ceremony, there were several other categories. However, our eyeballs were mainly grabbed by the best government mobile apps category. Regardless of the micro details of the parameters used to select these apps for the awards, the apps represent three areas and hence give us a sense of the basic social challenges that continue to haunt India. These challenges are – crime, malnutrition and electrification.
