Top 3 Best Government Mobile Apps in India

Mobile has literally become the driving force even for the government in India. The tangible evidence lies in the fact that the Government of India recognized a set of e-governance apps enabling three different areas. To ascertain this, we looked at the top government mobile apps which recently received honors from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology at the annual award ceremony (Digital India Awards 2016 which were earlier called Web Ratna Awards) organized by National Informatics Centre (NIC). At the ceremony, there were several other categories. However, our eyeballs were mainly grabbed by the best government mobile apps category. Regardless of the micro details of the parameters used to select these apps for the awards, the apps represent three areas and hence give us a sense of the basic social challenges that continue to haunt India. These challenges are – crime, malnutrition and electrification.

1. CitizenCop Mobile App: Built with an initiative to empower common man, CitizenCop Mobiile App, a location-based safety app, received the best government app award under the platinum category from NIC. The mobile app aims to make India crime-free. If the information available at Google Playstore is to be believed, Citizen Cop provides a hassle free and easy way for crime reporting.

According to the Google Play note, “CitizenCOP emphasizes on well-being of residents of a city, especially women. It has been successful in removing the barrier between citizens and police department. Whether you are victim of any crime or witness to an incident, CitizenCOP is here to assist you.

With CitizenCOP crime reporting app, you can –

2. Mid Day Meal Mobile App: The Mid-Day Meal mobile app got the second top honor at the Digital India Awards 2016. The app is supposed to enable effective monitoring of daily and monthly mid-day meal data to be sent by the schools. The app has tried to address the leakages that exist in the Mid Day Meal scheme. As per the information available on the Google Play Store, the app provides additional data communicating mechanism for the MDM in-charge/teacher who has to send the daily/monthly data using SMS. Interestingly once installed on your smartphone the app does not require the Internet to send MDM figures. Users has option to send the figure through SMS from the app. This simplifies the job of MDM in-charge, who even does not have to remember the SMS formats.

“The authorities at Block, District and State level have a very simple and effective mechanism in shape of this app on their mobile devices for effective and efficient monitoring of daily as well as monthly data transmission by all the MDM in-charge falling under their jurisdiction,” further reads the note on the Play Store. The authorities can send SMS alerts to all defaulters using single button available in the app.

3. GARV-Garmeen Vidyutikaran App: The Garv Grameen Vidytikaran app has got the 3rd best award and aims to enable the rural electrification which has been one of the biggest challenges even after 69 years of the independence. The mobile app includes a number of features and gives insights into the electrification landscape in India. Enabled with state-of-the-art features, the app has high ratings of 4.8 on the Google Play Store.
