The TikTok app had faced a brief ban in India in April, which was imposed by the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court. The ban was imposed after concerns o the platform being a medium for children to get exposed to explicit content was raised. However, the ban was lifted after TikTok ensured the court that adequate steps will be taken to protect children. They also claimed that they had removed over 6 million videos that violated their content policy and guidelines

The TikTok app, which was launched as Douyin in China in September 2016, is the leading short video platform in Asia, United States and several other countries. TikTok became the most downloaded app in 2018 with over a 100 million downloads, which surpassed the records held by extremely popular apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram, PUBG Mobile and so on.

TikTok app utilizes artificial intelligence to study a user’s interests and choices based on their interactions with the content available on the platform, and then displays a personalized content feed to each individual. One of the reasons for the app becoming so popular is that it has created a number of ‘Internet Celebrities’ and viral trends.

The TikTok users may also open their accounts in the privacy mode, or chose to share content with only their friends. The length of the video can range from 3 to 15 seconds, which can be shared on the platform. Currently, TikTok is one of the most downloaded app on Google Play store and iOS in India, and has millions of active users.
