The matter has thus been capturing the interest of tech-based start ups that are trying to make some difference with the use of new technologies. 360Ride is a Bengaluru-based start up that offers a free, real time, ride-share technology platform that enables users to share a ride on a car or a bike for travelling within the city, to the airport or intercity.

How does it work?

Any private vehicle that is used for commute can offer a ride on 360Ride platform whether it is a personal four wheeler or two wheeler or a taxi or auto.. Once the ride is shared, it will be matched with people who are looking for a ride in the same route at the specified travel time. “Once we find a match, users will get an alert in the app as well as through SMS. They meet and they travel along,”says, Lokesh Bevara, Co-founder and CEO of 360Ride, who is a  Stanford University Graduate in Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and has previously worked as a software engineer with EMC and IBM ISL.

Why should commuters be interested in the app?

360Ride offers users the comfort of sharing a ride in their personal vehicle at the same time offers a cost effective alternate way of commuting. Bevara adds about the visible impact, “Almost 50% of vehicles got cut off from the roads. When it comes to taking intercity trips, travelling can be heavy on the pockets. Although we can’t do much about the cost, we can utilize the existing resources to find a practical alternative.”

From a larger perspective, increasing popularity of ride sharing can eventually help in bringing down the traffic congestion and pollution issues in the metros to some extent.

As of now, the response has been good. “Daily we get 450 requests out of which we are able to match 50 to 60 requests. We have 20,000 download count in Google play stores and have 8000 active customers. Month on month customers count is increasing by 150% and ride count is increasing by 125%.

The security aspect

What sets this app apart is its strong thrust on the security aspect. Unlike other ride sharing services that verifies users through social media networks, the application seeks details of government approved identification proofs. Once the user uploads the required details, the verification team cross checks them after which users are allowed to post or pick ride on the application.

The ride sharing platform also works well from a women safety perspective, which is a key concern for female commuters in the metros. The platform also ensures that women users are allotted vehicles driven by women. The platform display option of women commuters to women drivers so that they feel safe.

Bevara shares his view about the future growth potential of the ride sharing concept, “With the rise in the number of smart phones and increasing penetration of the Internet, ride-sharing apps will not only dominate the usage of mobile apps but will also induce a positive impact on urban commuting as a revolutionary mode of transport.”

The company is currently operating in Bangalore and Delhi NCR and plans to spread its wings into major metros by the second quarter of 2016.
