In yet another example of how technology is making a difference in our daily
lives, smart cards are being used on the Silver Lanes of the Delhi-Noida-Delhi
toll bridge, popularly known as the DND Flyway.
The technology used on the flyway is quite innovative. The 8-lane expressway
with a 27-lane toll plaza accepts payment either by way of cash, pre-paid debit
cards and smart cards. In the case of cash payment, the processing time would be
10-15 second, whereas in the case of smart cards, the processing time would be
3-5 seconds. The user can also opt for an On-Board-Unit, which will allow him to
travel through the Gold lane with zero transit time. The toll management has
been entrusted to Intertoll of South Africa and toll collection equipment is
sourced from Compsis Brazil.
As far as the collection of toll goes, three methods have been devised for
toll collection: Cash and card lanes, smart cards lanes/Silver Lane and OBU (on
board unit)/Gold Lanes. Those using the four Silver Lanes would get a smart card
that would be read at an automatic machine. Now if you haven't driven on this
wonder flyover, it's time you went for a cruise!
Take a break from the frustrating caterpillar traffic and get high on another
miracle of technology. The 7.5-km bridge that connects the busy Maharani Bagh-Ashram
Road with Noida has cut down the daily commuter's travelling time drastically.
Wide roads, no-pollution, no red lights, zipping through empty spaces (beware of
the speed detectors!) can be fun. Just roll down your windows for the complete
experience!
