HERE Technologies has announced an ‘industry-academia collaboration’ with Symbiosis Institute of Geoinformatics (SIG), Pune. Amongst one of the few Indian institutes to offer programs in the niche domain of ‘Geoinformatics,’ SIG’s partnership with HERE Technologies aims to provide a platform for budding technocrats and geospatial enthusiasts to further their understanding of geospatial technology in the present- day scenario. The initiative will enable post graduate students to hone relevant skills, along with their ability to analyze, predict and utilize spatial insights in a business setting.

As a part of the partnership, a series of community events have been launched. To begin with a 2-day ‘Datathon’ event was organized in Pune, where 11 teams, comprising of 60 students, came together for brainstorming and problem solving on a few spatial challenges. This was followed by a 2-day ‘Mapathon’, that saw participation from 120+ mapping enthusiasts.

The winners and the runners-up at these events were awarded an array of exciting gifts and tech gadgets including iPads, Echo Dots, smart watches, laptops, Bluetooth headsets, etc. Basis an overwhelming response received from the student community at these events, a 3-month long marathon mapathon has been organized, that is expected to conclude at the end of the year.

At present, India is at an inflection point, with a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem, increased use of location intelligence and focus on technology at large, to build better communities and smarter cities, making it the hotbed for geospatial industry. As this happens, it will be critical for the industry to create a talent pool that thinks and solves problems creatively.

In such a scenario, industry-academia collaborations, such as this, can drive new ideas and build innovators for tomorrow, who are industry-ready. On the other hand, it also allows companies to benefit from fresh ideas, thereby enabling innovation and research.

As a part of the engagement, HERE Technologies and SIG will continue to work together on creating and onboarding a technologically advanced module of HERE’s offerings in SIG’s postgraduate curriculum.
