Sutherland augmented its staff strength in India by 25% in FY 08, even as it
bet on a two-pronged strategy to drive the next phase of growth: expanding
global delivery in order to provide multi-lingual support and at the same time
building centers of excellence (CoE).
As part of the first strategy, it is trying to set up facilities in Bulgaria
in Eastern Europe (where it plans to support fourteen languages), Latin America
and regions in Asia. Sutherlands CoE approach is based on the model that each
of its locations act as a center of excellence for creating solutions and,
sometimes, incubating processes, even though delivery may happen globally. As
part of that differentiated approach, Chennai has been developed as tech support
CoE, whereas Kochi is being developed as a mortgage processing CoE and Mumbai as
retail CoE. This is in addition to non-Indian locations like Virginia Beach in
the US (insurance) and the Philippines (financial services).

Sutherland has made a foray into tier-2 cities like Trichy, Madurai and
Tirunelveli, in addition to existing Kochi.
