Heaps of over flowing garbage bins, stench that makes one sick and hoards flies and mosquitoes thriving on the same is a common sight which most of us witness every day, especially in New Delhi. With the garbage collection not happening on a regular basis, the heaps are finally set on fire to rid residents of the stench, which is all the more dangerous for it adds toxic fumes to the environment that causes severe respiratory problems. This makes one wonder if there is no solution other than setting garbage heaps on fire. The answer is, Internet of Things (IoT) can save us from overflowing garbage bins.

IoT for smart waste management solutions has successfully been applied across several cities around the world and there is no reason why it should not be applied in India. IoT waste management solutions include the use of sensor enabled waste bins, technologies such as global positioning systems-enabled (GPS) routing, and radio frequency identification (RFID).

How IoT can be Used for Waste Management

Sensor enabled waste bins: These ‘smart garbage bins’ are enabled with wireless sensors that can measure the rate at which garbage is filled along with the temperatures of containers, after which the location of the bin is transmitted to the management. Also, all this information can be provided and monitored on a real time basis to civic bodies responsible for waste management.

RFID Technology: Radio frequency identification (RFID) enables identification and tracking of devices and storing device information. The Municipal Corporation’s server will be able to collect and analyze the status of all smart garbage systems and information collected through RFID readers. Information regarding wet and dry waste can also be identified.

GPS Enabled Routing: Once data related to fill rates and temperatures of smart garbage bins are collected, the sensors relay the exact location and other waste related information of the bins in question and the civic bodies can send out SMSes to nearby garbage collectors to do the needful before harmful carbon emissions are released.

Benefits of Using IoT Based Waste Management

This kind of an IoT based smart waste management system has various benefits such as: better utilization of manpower as the exact location and status of garbage collection is known so the drivers can collect only the containers that need to be emptied, reducing fleet cost as manual collection is an extremely tedious process for the exact state of the waste bins is not known in the latter, and also the provision of analytical information using this process is possible to determine the cost of waste collection per kilometer, making it easier for civic bodies to set a budget on the same.

Although this system has not been applied on a full scale, it must be considered for it certainly improves efficiency and reduces cost. An IoT based waste management system like this must be put into place for smart cities to be truly created and for safeguarding the environment.
