Sizzlers.
Who and what will sparkle and bubble and shine in2001? In this issue, we
focus on just a few of the companies and technologies (and not people or
products) that we believe will make their mark.
Sizzlers 2000 predictions were not far off, in the year when the toughest
survived, dot-com almost became a dirty word, there were frenzied acquisitions
and mergers, and Wipro and Rediff.com got listed on the US markets. The sizzlers
of last year were an assortment of old war horses in the IT industry, like
Infosys, TCS, Satyam and Wipro, and start-ups like MindTree Consulting and IPF
Online. Some are still hot. MindTree performed impressively in its debut year.
It grew to be a 300-strong, $15-million company, en route to its $123-million
vision 2005. Satyam Infoway went on with its acquisitions and went to the US
markets for a second round of funding. A few of our predictions fizzled out, and
a few others did okay, but did not sizzle–such as Eastern Software and IPF
Online.
The year-end witnessed huge erosions in stock valuations of the tech majors
and almost all dot-coms as messy business models crumbled. Finally, 2000 ended
with news of profit and sales warnings from global IT majors–which impacted
and will continue to impact the domestic industry.
For Sizzlers 2001, we stayed with companies that have started up in the past
few years. Most are Internet or e-enabling companies: an online learning portal, a convergence service provider,
an e-CRM solutions provider and a broadband Internet enabler.. A few may fizzle
out, but most of them will make the news. Here’s Dataquest’s list of
