The Unique Identification Authority of India is very much on its way to achieve its target of giving Aadhaar numbers to 600 million Indians by 2014. "Half of India's population would be enrolled for Aadhaar by 2014. Until now, we have given Aadhaar cards to 500 million Indians," said Nandan Nilekani, chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
He further divulged Dataquest that, "As of now, the Authority has faced no budgetary constraints and spent Rs 3496 crore till September 2013 to enroll citizens. The approved budget for Aadhaar enrollment is Rs 5469 crore." He further says that Aadhaar will become a growth engine since it will bring a lot of citizens into the country's ecosystem. "As a nest step, we are on our way to make this as an Online Digital ID Platform that will allow app developers to develop apps," he added.
