Transforming itself from a services to a solutions oriented company, Rolta India re-worked its HR policies, though it did not translate into a good showing in its HR ranking and score. Even after maintaining its employee satisfaction ranking and increasing the score, its overall ranking slipped by a place. But it did well overall, particularly on the managing slowdown parameter, where it ranked #1ahead of biggies like TCS and HCL Infosystems. Significantly, when it comes to the Ideal Company ranking, Rolta finds a place at #7 among the Top 10 Ideal Companies.
The company undertook a number of initiatives to keep employees happy. A re-work of its HR policies resulted in the adoption of lateral hiring policy for attracting talent from across the industry and to ensure that there were not only good visionaries but also executioners. Rolta also introduced a lot of functional designations in order to enable employees to map their growth path.
Keeping communication channels open, the management-to-employee communication was done on a quarterly basis ensuring that information on important moves of the company was conveyed.
Be it compensation schemes or rewards, Rolta kept its employees happy. Getting #4 ranking both in appraisal and salary parameters is because of the company doling out special cash incentives independent of the appraisal system for employees who excelled. Even for the production floor employees, top performers were rewarded; their names were also displayed to encourage others. The appraisal system also underwent a revamp with emphasis on KPIs and KRAs during quarterly reviews. Emphasis was also placed on employees writing two important projects in each quarter. It was #2 for transparency of appraisals.
During the downturn, Rolta concentrated on honing the skills of its employees by focussing on hand holding and training, especially for under-performers. Apart from performance based training, soft skills training programs were also conducted through an ERP based online model without work being affected. The employee referral scheme was re-launched and a five day work system was also implemented.
