NIT Surathkal, a new entrant, has gone ahead and topped all the NITs,
including NIT Calicut which was the undisputed leader till last year. A major
reason for this shift is the improved placement scenario at this college, even
better than some of the IITs in the country. Infrastructure has been another
strong area for Surathkal, coming in third after IIT Madras and Roorkee. In
terms of industry interface too, it comes in second. Considering the high scores
in all parameters, one may think a high HR perception scores will ensue.
However, that has not been the case (#13). One of the reasons could be the state
of evolution that the institute is currently in.
NIT Surathkal has made remarkable progress after its conversion from REC in
2002. The funds from the central government did work its magic. The institute
has more than 4,000 students and offers 27 PG courses. Today, NIT Surathkal
offers the highest number of accredited programmes. On the research front, last
year, it made a dramatic improvement and churned out about thirty PHDs, the
highest among the NITs. It plans to take the number of PHDs to fifty this year,
to coincide with its golden jubilee. This T-School also recently filed four
patents and It has also brought onboard professional chairs from companies such
as HP, Bosch, SAIL among others which takes it up a few notches on the industry
interface parameter.

NIT Surathkal has also been very proactive on the faculty training and
improvement of student infrastructure. It sent over 100 of its faculty for
conferences and training sessions abroad. Having signed sixteen international
MOUs and ten nationally, it plans to join hands with DCU Ireland and Union of
Applied Sciences for student exchange programs.
