This IIT is on an expansion mode. Last year, it focused on augmenting its
infrastructure and this got reflected in its scores. The infrastructure at IIT
Guwahati is now on par with other IITs. Moreover, the ongoing expansion plans
will significantly increase the uptake of students from the current 2,000 plus
to about 4,000. For the expansion, the institute will be using 550 acres of land
and its expected that the new facilities will come up by 2012. In terms of
academic environment, IIT Guwahati has an edge over IIT Kanpur and Roorkee. On
the placement side, its almost on par with IIT Delhi. In a recent development,
IIT Guwahati was designated as the organizing institute for Graduate Aptitude
Test in Engineering (GATE) for 2010.
Prominent names like Accenture, Ashok Leyland, BPCL, C-DOT visited the campus
this time. As usual, IIT Guwahati maintained its popularity with IT companies
like Cisco, Adobe, Cognizant, CADopia, and others despite the slowdown.
In terms of speciality centers for research, IIT Guwahati boasts of the
Center of Nanotechnology which was started with the mandate to foster
development and research in nanotechnology.
Another speciality center that has a huge potential is the Center for
Energy, catering to the training and research needs of the Indian energy sector
and contributing to international research in energy in this age of achieving
lower carbon footprint. The center will give priority to activities in the field
of bioenergy, small hydro-power, and solar photovoltaic and solar thermal power.
