L&T Infotech grew by a modest 11% to turn in revenues of Rs 265
crore in fiscal 2001-02. The company had expected to grow rapidly but was halted
in its tracks by the economic slowdown. More specifically, the manufacturing
industry, which is the most important target vertical for the company, had a
difficult year, both in the US and India. The pace of the ERP and SCM market
slowed down and it had its fallout on companies like L&T Infotech as well.
Other verticals that the company has been targeting are utilities, telecom, and
infrastructure. For one, the company’s learning curve has always been shorter
because of the parent, L&T’s, various business units for which it has
implemented and invested in a lot of technologies. Either the learning or the
asset and in some cases both can be reused. Examples–the S390 mainframe used
for payroll, experience in setting up network operations center, ERP, databases,
integration technologies, and Web technologies.
