The year 2009 happens to be IIT Kanpurs golden jubilee year and it has
indeed come a long way since its inception in 1959. In this years survey
rankings, despite taking the overall fourth rank, IIT Kanpur topped the charts
among the six IITs in terms of placements. However, it tripped on academic
environment where it scored lower than other IITs.
Meanwhile on the IT infrastructure side, this IIT has shone bright. Its
computer center has close to 100 plus Linux and Windows terminals that are
supported by the PARAM-1,000 supercomputers. It also has an impressive array of
Sun workstations that take care of compute intensive workloads. IIT Kanpur is
one of the most networked institutes with impressive institute wide LAN and
Ethernet access for each student in residence halls.
Its strength on placement got reinforced in this years campus recruitment as
well. The biggies that had offered plum placements included companies like
Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, IBM, Amazon, and Nomura. IIT Kanpur also remains a
favorite hunting ground for major corporates. One of the reasons for this could
be that its MBA program is well received by the industry. It has
state-of-the-art interactive teaching facilities that help augment the endeavour
of the faculty in creating both knowledge and opinion leaders. Classrooms, labs
and hostel rooms are provided with continuous connectivity through LAN and
Internet facilities. SIDBI Innovation and Incubation Center (SIIC) is a live
management laboratory where MBA students have opportunities to convert their
theoretical understanding to solutions for problems faced by the start-up firms.
Facilities like lecture halls, seminar rooms and audio-visual aids have been
designed to promote learning and interaction.
