Though a shade better this year, CMS Computers settled for another
year of sedate growth (7.4 %) to touch gross revenues of Rs 350 crore. According
to the company, it avoided many deals in order to "protect
profitability". Outsourcing elements like maintenance services, systems
integration, and banking as a vertical, formed the three main focus areas for
CMS. Two niche product areas supplanted the focus segments–data-cards and
volume printers. During the year, the company invested Rs 60 crore on
infrastructure building for its outsourcing business. Banking, a strong vertical
for the company, contributed 40% to total revenues.
The company appeared to be clearly focused on its core strengths and
verticals, but it evidently came at the cost of growth, as some other sectors
that were driving growth in the market, got ignored. For the next year, though,
the company remains bullish–predicting a healthy growth rate of 30%.
