This homeGROWN IT peripherals company could not survive the onslaught
of the slowdown and its adverse impact on the domestic hardware market. Microtek’s
revenues slipped from Rs 476 crore in fiscal 2000-01 to Rs 400 crore (DQ
estimate) in 2001-02. The negative growth of 16% comes after three consecutive
years of healthy growth numbers–45% in 1998-99, 29% in 1999-00, and 30% in the

region contributed the majority of revenues (33%, or Rs 132 crore) to the
overall kitty, while 25% (Rs 100 crore) came from the southern region. The
eastern and western regions contributed Rs 64 crore and 92 crore, respectively.
The year also saw Microtek emerge as the clear leader in the monochrome monitor
segment, thanks to Samtel’s decision to exit from the business.
