No review of SAPs FY10 India sojourn would be complete without a mention of
the tragic and untimely demise of SAP Indias ex-president & CEO Ranjan Das.
Industry veteran Peter Gartenberg took over as the Indian MD. The show went on,
as it must. And what a show it was with SAP India registering a triple-digit
growth in three of the four quarters. Immediate recognition came from the
Waldorf headquarters. In a strategic move, India was shifted from the APAC
region to EMEA , that, despite the diminishing euro, remains its biggest
geography. While some analysts argue that the shift might have been done to
offset the situation in EMEA, SAP insists that this was a part of their focus on
the BRIC countries. China however, still remains a part of APAC...

Nearly half of SAP Indias revenues came from new licenses. It lost some
ground in CRM, where Microsoft became aggressive and Oracle Siebel still ruled
the roost. ERP growth too slackened. With more traction happening on individual
add-on modules and niche applications like GRC, overall business driven consumer
apps contributed a quarter of the revenue. But last year, it was business
analytics that shone for SAP, with its Business Objects suite capturing 33% of
the market. SAPs chase the SMB segment strategy also yielded results. Maximum
number of net new client additions came from SMEs, accounting for nearly 40% of
its revenue. Some key SME wins included Paragon Polymers, Alok Industries and
Ramky Enviro Engineers.

Vertical wise, while manufacturing remained the biggest vertical, telecom and
utilities too scored big. Greenfield operators like Virgin Mobile, TTSL, and MTS
joined the SAP bandwagon and under the APDRP program, SAP bagged seven states.
There were eight win-backs, with a crucial one being iGate (from Oracle
PeopleSoft). SAP expanded its portfolio horizontally by introducing its
sustainability reporting solution. Otherwise too, inorganic growth continued as
SAP took over Highdeal and made its Sybase intention public. How it integrates
its solutions with the mobile expertise of Sybase and how it impacts SAP India
will be the interesting question for FY11.
