New Update

Like many companies, it was a difficult year for Sify as well; but amidst the
downturn, the companys HR tried to avoid knee jerk reactions and nudged its
employees to adapt to the changed environment. Making a first time entry into
the DQ-BES survey, Chennai based Sify scored lower on training and its relevance
to the work. However, the HR head justifies that the company has a pro-active
training backbone and programs such as STEP (Sify Training and Education
Program), an online training management system that focuses on behavioral and
technical training. That apart, the employees agreed that the company gave them
enough freedom to take risks, and did not penalize anybody failing in a new
initiative. Yet another area where Sify scored well is its appraisal system.
Its built a highly transparent online appraisal system with clear KPIs.

Another example of its transparent policies is that over the last year the
business and functional heads reinforced their business plans and communicated
to the employees what was expected of them, thus relieving their anxieties when
the times were uncertain. The company also has a Question Box on its intranet,
where employees can express their views or can clarify their concerns that
subsequently get addressed by the senior management team.

Another area of concern for Sify is employee stress though the HR head says
that the company has many stress busting programs. Sify also has an HR section
called all in a days work in its companys in-house magazine called Prime
Time, which typically updates its employees on what is happening in various
locations, in terms of events and celebrations. This enables the family members
of the employees to also get updated.

In the upcoming year, the company would be concentrating on four major areas.
The things that top the agenda are leadership development among its managerial
team that will enable it to create sustainable growth; sustained workforce cost
management and value creation so that it can take advantage of the opportunities
when there is the upturn; engaging its employees, and continue to instill a
positive organizational culture and attitudes is another focus area. And Sify
will focus on ensuring that skills are kept relevant and up to date through
various learning initiatives.
