BIT Mesra improved on its overall score (by seven points) and rank (by two
positions) from last year, mainly on the back of a strong showing on HR
perception (#9) and decent record in infrastructure (#18) and academic
environment (#19). While that means that the college was very much on the
recruiter radar, a dismal showing on industry interface (at #50), it was in the
same soup as BITS Pilani) meant that didnt translate to the extent expected on
the placement front (a less than average #27 for a Top20 college). A recognition
of academic excellence came when two students were awarded by Association of
Indian Universities (AIU) for developing an Analytical Quality Assessment Tool
for Television News Media.
The HR perception, perhaps, got boost with the decision of the Jharkhand
government to grant Rs 23.76 crore to set up a BIT extension center in Dumka,
the HQ of the Santhal Pargana Commissionary. However, the delay in releasing
this fund coupled with the governments refusal to pay another Rs 2.42 crore as
requested by the college, had led to controversies. This extension center would
offer four coursesBBA, BCA, MBA, and MCA; BIT Mesra itself introduced three new
courses since January 2009applied physics, applied chemistry, and applied
mathematics. BIT is the countrys first university to open an overseas center,
and now has eight extension centers in India and three in the Gulfafter centers
in Bahrain, Muscat, and UAE, it planned a fourth offshore campus venture in
Mauritius.
