TANCOM ELECTRONICS  Giant Rebound 

This flagship company of the Tandon
Group saw an amazing turnaround from its state of affairs in fiscal 1998-99. It
grew 922% to post a turnover of Rs 174 crore. Compare this with last fiscal’s
Rs 17 crore.

The reason it grew so much last fiscal
was the change in technology in the manufacturing of head stack assemblies–from
metal gap to magneto resistive technology. The last few years had not been
encouraging in terms of
revenues for Tancom Electronics and the company was aiming to attain the level
of growth it had achieved in 1996-97. Exports accounted for the entire revenues
of the company. Tancom raked in Rs 171 crore through the sale of head stack
assemblies. Its head gimble assembly business contributed Rs 50 lakh and voice
coil assembly got in Rs 146 lakh. The company is looking at upgrading the
existing high-class clean rooms, but is also keeping itself abreast with the latest
technologies and exploring newer vistas. At present Tancom Electronics exports
mainly to the USA, Europe, Singapore and Thailand.

The
company supplyied products to Western Digital Corp, an international
manufacturer of hard disk drives. Tancom’s association with Western Digital
dates back to 1985. It is also in the process of developing giant magneto
resistive (GMR) products, and intends to attain volume manufacturing of these.
The company manufactures voice coils for radio frequency identification devices,
which had a wide customer base in Europe and was widely used in the automobile
sector. It is looking at widening the customer base in Europe, and is
establishing volume-manufacturing facilities for this. It is also diversifying
into the manufacturing of printed circuit board assembly and is establishing a
division for manufacturing different types of products. DQ
