PCS Industries Putting Pieces Together

A growth rate of 23% during the fiscal
was slow for PCS Industries as compared to fiscal 1998-99 when it had grown by
32%. The company posted a turnover of Rs 179 crore for the fiscal. The overall
share of revenue from systems increased marginally, from Rs 125 crore in 1998-99
to Rs 140 crore in the last fiscal. The company signed 11 contracts for the
supply of servers. The list of buyers included the Stock Holding Corp of India,
Bank of Baroda, State Bank of India and Central Bank of India. In the ERP
segment, PCS focused on SMEs. It tied up with DSQ software, an exclusive
distributor for AS-400 specific ERP packages like MARCAM and MAPICS, apart from
other ERP products.

Another
segment that it focused upon was internet service providers (ISPs). It bagged an
order for a total solutions package for Swastik Netvision Telecom, an ISP in
Gujarat. PCS would supply remote access servers from ACC-Newbridge and
application servers and firewalls from IBM/PCS. It would also implement total
system integration and training for Swastik as well as provide connectivity for
all the 18 locations of the latter in Gujarat with small points of presence at
remote locations.

Continuing with its renewed initiatives
for the channel business, PCS increased its reseller base by
more than 350 and appointed distributors even in the neighboring Bangladesh. In
India, it opened new branches in Nagpur and Lucknow as part of its expansion
plans. PCS’ offerings included Sirius, a Novell-certified server and an
upgradable Orion PC.

In fiscal 2000-01, the company plans to consolidate its
position in the banking, corporate and government sectors. Further, it plans to
increase its focus on the channel business, with penetration, brand reach and
retail sales strategy across the country. It also plans to expand its channel
network to 500. And, like many others, PCS too is embracing ecommerce. DQ
