MICROTEK INTERNATIONAL Meeting Challenges Head-on 

Microtek International, the Delhi-based
manufacturer of computer peripheral products, recorded a turnover of Rs 311
crore, according to DQ estimates.

During the last fiscal, Microtek
launched its 15" 69KHz multimedia color monitor. Competition from domestic
and MNCs not withstanding, it put up a brave front to remain among the top five
monitor manufacturers in the country. During the last quarter of 1999-2000, the
company also averaged a sale of about 7,000 UPSs per month. Further, the company
re-launched its modems sold in the brand name of Smart modems. It also witnessed
a growth in multimedia computer speaker systems and keyboards.

The company plans to achieve the goal
of being the largest integrated peripherals manufacturer by expanding its
product range. It is also looking at increasing its manufacturing capacity, and
plans to add two more plants in
the ensuing fiscal at Daman and Parwanoo for the manufacture of monitors and
motherboards.

Microtek decided to spin off a separate
company to diversify and focus on the software exports business. The new
company, Microtek Infosoft, will focus on e-commerce projects and regular
software development activities, primarily, for the US market. Microtek Infosoft
recently tied up with
Pyramid Consulting Inc, an US-based company for marketing operations in that
region. Microtek also stated portal initiatives as part of its business in the
new company. The company is set to launch a portal www.microtekdirect.com for
business-to-business transactions, which will enable
its customers as well as its authorized dealers and distributors to interact
with Microtek at various levels.

The company is trying to have a multi-vendor tie-up for
sourcing components. It also plans to take a significant

brand building exercise in the coming fiscal to reach out to customers. DQ
