The company followed its
diversification strategy to register a 209% growth during 1998-99, but slowed
down a bit in 1999-00. Nevertheless, it romped home with a revenue of Rs 237
crore to show a 67% growth. Its net profit also grew substantially to Rs 70
crore, up 93% from the 1998-99 figure of Rs 37 crore. And all the while, the
company was busy consolidating its market share in new technology areas of euro,
internet, computer
telephony integration, ecommerce, groupware, Windows CE and Palm OS, mobile-ecommerce
and contextual computing.

Information Technologies India Ltd (ITIL)
also identified mobile computing as the key area for future growth, and engaged
Andersen Consulting for assistance in setting up strategic directions and
for chalking out a business plan. Being one of the earliest players in India
with about two years of research and development experience in mobile computing,
the company is hoping to reap maximum benefits from a vast client base of 200
million internet users and 400 million mobile
users worldwide. And its portal, palmgreetings.com is the first step in this
direction. It is a site that enables users to send and receive greetings over
their mobiles.

ITIL also earmarked Rs 200 crore for growth through
acquisitions and new ventures. While the company is on its way to acquire
software development and service companies in the US, the UK and Africa, it has
also obtained an all-India class A internet service provider license with plans
to start services in 11 cities across the country. It also plans to float 22
portals with Indiai2I as the umbrella site. The company is further looking at
aggressively expanding its IT education business and increasing the number of
its education centers from nine to 100 by the end of the ensuing fiscal through
