PMRF 2020, an initiative that was started to improve the quality of research in several higher educational institutions in the country, has included NIT Trichy this time. National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, which is currently the only NIT in the top 25 Institutions in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking has been included in the PMRF awarding Institutions along with 6 Central Universities.
What the PMRF 2020 Scholars at NIT Trichy will Receive?
According to the PMRF 2020 scheme, the Institute will get nearly 20 PMRF scholars who are eligible to get a fellowship of Rs 70,000 per month for the first two years, Rs 75,000 per month for the 3rd year, and Rs 80,000 per month in the 4th and 5th year.
Apart from the fellowship that will be given every month, a research grant of Rs 2.00 lakh per year will be provided to each of the selected fellows for a period of 5 years to cover their academic contingency expenses and for foreign or national travel expenses.
Since PMRF scholars will have to contribute to nation-building by working on state-of-the-art research problems, the stipend paid in this scheme is more than double the amount paid to other research scholars.
However, only scholars who have an outstanding academic record in their graduation, GATE scores above 650 in the relevant subject, and those who have participated in Science Olympiad will be considered for this fellowship, says NIT Trichy.
“There will be a rigorous review of the performance of Prime Minister's Research Fellowship holders and continuation of the next year fellowship shall be contingent upon successful review. The National Coordination Committee (NCC) will periodically review and monitor implementation of the scheme,” said NIT Trichy in a statement.
How to Apply for PMRF 2020?
This time, students interested to apply for PMRF 2020 can do so by direct entry, which is by applying and getting selected in the PhD programme in one the PMRF granting institutes. The PMRF granting institute can then recommend the scholars based on their merit for the award of scholarship.
There is also a lateral channel entry, wherein a candidate is already doing his or her PhD in the PMRF granting institute for 12 months, and the PMRF granting institute, in which the student is enrolled, makes a strong recommendation for the candidate.
