New Update
Google passkey

Google is now promoting passkeys as the default login method which is a new password-free login method. Passkeys are now the default method of authentication for personal accounts, according to the company.

Advertisment

The big tech company is actively promoting the adoption of passkeys and has hailed them as the future of security, so it's possible that passwords could soon be outmoded. In October 2022, Google started integrating passkey functionality into its Chrome browser and Android operating system. In May 2023, it expanded the capability to include personal Google accounts.

Users will now see prompts to generate and utilize passkeys for all of their subsequent sign-ins. There won't be a need to input a password to access Google accounts, such as Gmail when one enables a passkey.

Additionally, the "Skip password when possible" option will be enabled in Google Account settings once you enable passkeys. This implies that passkeys are still optional, and one can easily go back to the conventional password login method if they don't like them for whatever reason.

Users will be able to simply use a fingerprint, facial scan, or pin to unlock their device while using passkeys. According to Google, they are 40% faster than passwords and rely on a more secure kind of cryptography. One can also avoid the hassle of having to remember all those digits and other unusual characters in passwords by enabling passkeys.

People can use passkeys to log in to Google services like YouTube, Search, and Maps since their launch earlier this year. Passkeys are now available on platforms like Uber and eBay. Additionally, Google claims that WhatsApp compatibility is on the way.
