India's expenditure on research and development (R&D) showed an increase but still accounted for only 0.7% of the GDP, with a mere 40% sourced from the private sector. Gopalkrishnan advocated for a substantial leap to increase R&D spending to 3% of GDP, calling for a fivefold rise in private sector investment.

He highlighted the transformation of numerous global capability centers into R&D hubs in India across various sectors like pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and biotech. The growth in the software product market and its correlation with R&D applications showcased significant progress.

Acknowledging India's prowess in producing data scientists and scaling up this capability, Gopalkrishnan emphasized leveraging this advantage. He emphasized that India should capitalize on its reputation as a research destination, catering to 20% of the world's population, particularly in STEM fields.

The cost-effectiveness of research in India was underscored, with the output being five times higher for every dollar spent, especially in software development and R&D.
