PAN-Aadhaar Linking Due Date Extended to March 2020

The last date for the mandatory PAN-Aadhaar linking has now been extended to March 2020. The decision to extend the last date has been announced by the official account of the Income Tax Department, Government of India, a day before the earlier deadline, which was stated to be 31 December 2019.

“The due date for linking of PAN with Aadhaar as specified under sub-section 2 of Section 139AA of the Income-tax Act,1961 has been extended from 31st December, 2019 to 31st March, 2020. Notification no.107 of 2019 dated 30/12/2019 issued by CBDT,” said a tweet from the official account of the Income Tax Department.

In September last year, the Supreme Court had declared the government's flagship Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid and held that the biometric ID would remain mandatory for the filing of income tax returns and allotment of PAN card.

Section 139 A.A (2) of the Income Tax Act says that every person having PAN as on 1st July 2017, and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar, must intimate his Aadhaar number to the tax authorities. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) recently announced that 125 crore residents of India now have Aadhaar.

At present UIDAI receives about 3 crore authentication requests every day. Residents are also more inclined on keeping their details in Aadhaar up to date as UIDAI recorded close to 331 crore successful Aadhaar updations (biometric and demographic) till date, said a release from DD News. At present UIDAI receives about 3 to 4 lakh Aadhaar  request every day .
