Tech companies continue to lay off employees as AI changes the way industries work. In 2025, over 71 tech companies have cut about 7,000 jobs so far.
-
Amazon is planning more job cuts, especially in its communications and sustainability teams.
-
Microsoft is letting go of employees who are not meeting performance expectations.
-
Meta (Facebook) is cutting 3,600 jobs as part of a strategy to improve efficiency.
-
Google has introduced a voluntary exit program for its Platforms & Devices team, offering employees severance packages.
With AI taking over many tasks, big companies are adjusting their workforce, leading to job losses across the tech industry. Before we dive into how employees can survive the layoff let's first understand the cause and requirements to sustain the job.
Is automation and artificial intelligence (AI) the cause of Layoff?
Because automation and artificial intelligence (AI) are replacing some employment, many businesses are laying off employees. We believe it mainly occurs in back-office and customer service positions. As companies begin to use AI, they are cutting employees to work faster and more effectively. AI is faster and human work is comparatively slower. Many companies are facing economic problems like slow growth after the pandemic, high prices (inflation), and rising interest rates. To save money, they are cutting jobs and reducing costs. All big companies' goals are to save money. Big companies like Microsoft and Meta are firing employees based on their performance. With performance it is understood human touch cannot match AI. Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said that future job cuts will depend on performance reviews. At the same time, Google is offering some employees a voluntary exit option. This option will allow them to leave with a package as part of its plan to restructure and adjust to market changes.
However, AI is changing the job market by replacing some jobs while also creating new ones. AI cannot take over completely! Some roles may disappear due to automation, but new jobs will be needed where people work with AI and manage its use.
What should the Employees do to protect themselves from layoffs?
Employees facing job uncertainty can take steps to stay prepared. Layoffs are bound to happen. Learning new skills through online courses, especially in AI and technology, can help. Upskilling is the only way to protect yourself. Connecting with professionals in the industry can provide support and job leads. You have to be in the business to know the requirements. Employees must be open to more work and not depend upon the current job only. Keep faith in exploring new career paths in growing fields as it will open up better opportunities. We highly recommend managing finances wisely. Savings for emergencies is important to handle any job loss smoothly.
Layoffs in various big companies
Microsoft has announced new job cuts, affecting employees in different departments. Especially those who did not meet the company’s performance standards. While Microsoft confirmed the layoffs, it did not say how many workers were affected. A report from Business Insider said that employees from Microsoft’s security division were among those impacted. But there is a ray of hope for India. Puneet Chandok, the head of Microsoft India and South Asia, has confirmed that these layoffs will not impact employees in India.
Meta is planning to lay off more than 3,600 employees who did not meet performance standards. All companies that target performance are depending upon AI. CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed this decision, as reported by Bloomberg. He said the company wants to improve performance management. Therefore they have to let go of low-performing workers more quickly. These layoffs are part of what Zuckerberg called a "challenging year" for Meta. The job cuts will affect about 5% of Meta’s 72,400 employees as of September.
