Ola, India's ride-hailing behemoth, has entered the AI (Artificial Intelligence) world with the debut of Krutrim, one of the country's first homegrown AI models. Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO of Ola, debuted Krutrim during a live event, emphasising its local roots, founded on Indian languages and data. Ola wants to encourage using local AI solutions like Krutrim rather than Western AI alternatives like ChatGPT and Google.

During the event, Aggrawal emphasised Krutrim's simplicity and user-friendly interface, expressing its potential to attract a varied user base in India. AI model promises to understand 20 Indian languages and generate content in 10 of them, including Marathi, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Odia

Even though Krutrim is currently in beta, Ola envisions a whole AI ecosystem that includes an AI chip, a sustainable AI cloud, a family of AI models, and a user-facing application. The company demonstrated the AI chatbot's capacity to tackle simple requests like writing stories and poems.

Krutrim is available in the basic version and the Pro model, which will be available in the fourth quarter. Ola's ambitious push into AI is consistent with a broader industry trend in which major tech businesses invest in AI development. While the road ahead would need significant investment, Ola intends to position itself as a key participant in creating India's AI strategy, harmonising with government ambitions.

Here are some of the critical features of Krutrim:

  • Multilingual: Krutrim can understand and generate text in 20 Indian languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, and Odia.
  • Large language model: Krutrim is a significant language model trained on a massive dataset of text and code. This allows the model to generate more creative and informative text than smaller models.
  • Open source: Krutrim is open source, which means it is available for anyone to use or modify. This could help to accelerate the development of AI in India.

Krutrim is still under development but can potentially be a significant player in the Indian AI market. The models could power various applications and help make AI more accessible and affordable for businesses and individuals nationwide.
