The visionary
From the days when he was arrested in Bulgaria apparently on espionage
charges, to working as a software professional in Patni, to creating a global
company touching $3 bn in revenues, Murthy has indeed traversed a long and
interesting road. There have been interesting milestones on the way: 1981, when
Murthy with six friends started Infosys in a Pune garage with Rs 10,000 savings
of his wife's; 1991, when Infosys made its epic public debut; and 1998 when it
was the first Indian company listed on NASDAQ. But Murthy's biggest
achievement has been in bringing a certain Gandhianism to corporate functioning,
an emphasis on ethics and philanthropy as reflected in the Infosys Foundation.
