New Update

Today, NIIT is not just a school for learning

computers. It has moved way beyond its training niche. With its software development business expanding overseas, NIIT has become a global force to reckon with. Says Rajendra

Pawar, Chairman, NIIT, “We have entered a period where we want to become net creators of technology. That is, we use technology but we also produce technology. So in our various businesses we have started creating technology which is our own. Therefore, when we put a solution together there is an increasing component of our own IT and our own technology in that overall solution.”

If numbers could speak of the company’s accolades, NIIT has them in abundance. The company operates through 18 wholly-owned subsidiaries and two joint venture companies. It has spread its wings in 31 countries all over the globe, which implies a business strategy with a much broader vision. Explains

Pawar, “Since we have now gone into over 30 countries, understanding the markets is working backwards from there. So we use a term called geo-centricity, which is geography centered rather than head office centered.

We started that about five years ago–empowering the geography, giving them much more freedom to determine the fate of the company, compared to the early days when everything was thought at the head office. That’s the big change.”

NIIT, as it claims, has always been in the knowledge business and not much has changed in terms of that mission. But as the industry moves into the internet era, the company wants to leverage on this opportunity as well. The future vision of the company is to transform itself into

eNIIT. According to Pawar, “With the coming of the internet, the computer is beginning to touch many more people than we had ever envisaged. So in the early stages, we had talked about people as students who want to learn something in IT. Today, when you ask–who is the user, the answer is anyone. What do they want? Anything.

Where are they? Anywhere. When will they want to use the system? Anytime. It’s a different situation. But the central issue is bringing people and computers together successfully. So that has taken us into

ecommerce. To deliver all our services including education on the net.”

As NIIT’s software business gets e-worthy, it has a wide range of services on offer. eASY Pay for electronic payment, eASY Mart, the online shopping store, eASY Port, the portal creation solution, eASY Serve, the electronic service delivery solution and eASY Voice, the interactive voice response system.

The coming years would see the industry focus on the power of knowledge and NIIT has certainly transformed its knowledge business to give it new
dimensions.
