OpenAI and NVIDIA have entered a partnership to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of NVIDIA systems for OpenAI's next-generation AI infrastructure. The agreement includes NVIDIA investing up to USD 100 billion in OpenAI, with the funding tied to the deployment of each gigawatt of systems.

The first gigawatt of computing power is scheduled for deployment in the second half of 2026. This phase will use NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform, a new microarchitecture for GPUs designed to process large volumes of data. The Vera Rubin platform is built to handle complex AI tasks like software coding and generative video.

The partnership comes as OpenAI seeks to expand its computing capabilities. The company, which reports over 700 million weekly active users, has stated that access to computing infrastructure is the basis for the future economy. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman have both discussed the need for significant compute power to create new AI breakthroughs and make them available at scale.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has called the collaboration a "next leap forward." The partnership builds on a long history between the two companies, with Huang noting that they have pushed each other for a decade. The two companies will coordinate on hardware and software roadmaps to support future model development.

The deal also provides NVIDIA with a financial stake in a key customer, reinforcing its position as a leading supplier of AI chips. For OpenAI, the investment secures funding and access to the computing power needed to compete in a field where access to GPUs is often a key constraint.

This agreement adds to the ongoing collaborations between OpenAI and other companies, including Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and various Stargate partners. The goal of these partnerships is to build advanced AI infrastructure.
